Good A and AS Level grades are a key to admission for all the world’s major English speaking universities and many non-English speaking universities.

Good grades at A Level can result in up to one full year of advanced standing or credit at universities in the USA and Canada. There are some examples below that should help for university study in the USA.

1 Yale University awards credit for grades A and B

2 Harvard University requires three A Level subjects at grades A and B

3 Boston University grants advance credit for grades A, B and C

4 New York University grants advance credit for grades A,B and C

5 MIT

GCE Advanced (A) Level is one of the most recognized qualifications around the world. For over 50 years, A Levels have been accepted as proof of academic ability for entry to universities and institutes of higher education of job entry. International A Level is a ‘gold standard’ qualification. It has exactly the same value in admitting students to universities as the UK equivalent and is accepted as an entry qualification by universities worldwide.

The Global Assessment Certificate

The Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) is one of several English-language programs offered by ACT Education Solutions, Limited, a subsidiary of ACT Inc, based in Iowa City, US. The GAC us a Foundation Studies (or Pre-University) Program that aims to provide the necessary skills for students to graduate from High School with English-languange proficiency in many subjects. The GAC also provides students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to enter and successfully complete a bachelor’s degree at one of many selected foreign universities.

Course Program

The GAC has three levels. It is flexible enough to be taught full-time over nine months (if students have completed the equivalent of Year 11 in Australia), or part-time over two years with other subjects chosen by the school. The GAC is taught in English, and students are expected to speak English in the classroom. However, the GAC is designed for students whose first language is not English, so Academic English – in both Reading & Writing and Listening & Speaking – are essential subjects in each level of the program, which also includes the core subjects of Mathematics, Business, Computing, Science & Social Science.

Later in the Program, students take a ACT Assessment, a test used extensively by universities in the US to determine university entry. (The GAC is the only international university preparation program that includes its curriculum). Other Elective units allow language tests. At the end of Level 3, GAC graduates receive a:

1 Global Assessment Certificate

2 Academic transcript with a Grade Point Average

3 National High School Certificate (if studied with the GAC)

4 IELTS certificate or TOEFL Certificate (optional)

5 ACT Assessment Certificate

Assessments

Students are assessed on their skills continuously so teachers and parents can monitor the students’ progress during each level. The students’ result are not dependent on one final exam, but from ongoing assessment tasks such as oral presentations, written assignments, computer-based research, role plays, log books and reflective learning journals.

What Students Learn

GAC Students obtain highly-developed research and independent learning skills, as well as proficiency in English, advanced computing skills and a practical understanding of the strategies needed for successful study in English-Speaking universities. Also very important are the soft skills taught, such as cooperative learning, independent study techniques, team work, critical thinking, time-management and problem solving.

Where is the GAC taught?

The GAC is taught in Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam

GAC Pathway Universities

The GAC has been evaluated and recognized as meeting university admissions requirements by over 100 Pathway Universities in the United State, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico. Some Pathway Universities offer credit points for an undergraduate degree, while others provide scholarships – which can significantly reduce tuition and living expenses.
